General Philosophy

The essence of B.Sc. Sociology programme and the Department’s overall academic and social expectations is to produce graduates who would be imbued with the disciplinary skills and insights of the Sociological Science and who would therefore be equipped with a Scientific and comprehensive understanding of the nature and dynamics of human societies and cultures in general, and the African and Nigerian socio-cultural worlds in particular.

Objectives

The specific objectives of the Department are:

  1. To train and develop in the students a critical and scientific consciousness of the Nigerian society in particular and the Africa and Global society in general.
  2. To develop in the students an appreciation of the mechanisms, theories and methods for analyzing society so as to understand and provide solutions to its problems;
  3. Thus, to develop in the students the ability to play significant social developmental roles in such diverse fields as administration, communication, teaching, health, social security, social policy formulation and implementation, industry, social welfare etc.

To produce students who are capable of undertaking postgraduate work in the discipline and who can take up careers in tertiary educational and research institutions.

Admission Requirements
  1. Five credit passes at SSCE including English Language, Government and two other Arts or Social Science subjects and at least a pass in Mathematics.
  2. UTME candidates must score the minimum points in the following subjects: English, Government and two other Arts or Social Science subjects.
  3. DE candidates must have two ‘A’ Level credit passes in Arts and Social Sciences subjects. Credit pas in Diploma in Social Work. At least a pass in Mathematics at O’Level is required.
  4. Candidates must in addition to above satisfy the University Matriculation requirements.
