The philosophy underlying the work of the Department of Economics is to produce high quality graduates imbued with an enthusiasm to make their contributions to the Nigerian, African and world community by equipping them with a broader foundation of knowledge in the field of economics and related sciences. OBJECTIVES

The programmes are established to achieve the following academic objectives that will add value to the nation in general:

  1. To develop the capacity of students to practice Economics.
  2. To develop student’s critical judgement, their ability to observe, understand and synthesize data on socio-economic problem using the principles of economic theory and the techniques of research that will enable them make objective contributions to the realization of national development objectives;
  3. To enable graduates of this Department compete favourably with their contemporaries in the labour market by preparing them with a sound background required for any responsible professional, administrative and social undertaking;
  4. To widen the knowledge base and enhance the capacity of student to address the socio-economic problems of multicultural society through provision of training in Islamic Economics, thereby giving them a wider menu of options available in the toolkit of the economics profession;
  5. To provide an appropriate environment that enables graduates raise their level of creativity and promote spirit of self-reliance;
  6. To cultivate and develop their intellectual ability required for successful pursuit of postgraduate studies.
Admission Requirements
  1. Five credit passes at SSCE (or its equivalent) in English Language, Mathematics, and any other subjects.
  2. Candidates must score the minimum points in the UTME in the following subjects: English, Maths, Economics and any other subject.
  3. Direct Entry requirement: Two “A” level credit passes in Economics and any of Science, Social Science, Management subjects or History/Government. NCE or ND with credit passes in relevant subject. A merit is required for NCE, 6 points for IJMB or GCE A-Level, and lower credit for OND.
  4. Candidates must in addition to above satisfy the University Matriculation requirements.
