Objectives

Objectives of the Department are:

  1. To provide training in the principles of Political Science and their application to the type of Degree programme concerned- Political Economy, Public Administration or International Relations;
  2. To stimulate the students intellectually through the programme, in such a way that they appreciate social problems;
  3. To provide a solid foundation of knowledge about the workings of society and its institutions and develop the skills for the constructive use of such knowledge;
  4. To develop in students, the ability to apply the knowledge to the resolution of societal problems and conflicts;
  5. To develop in students, such skills and competency that would allow them to be self-reliant and entrepreneurial;
  6. To provide the students with the skill-base from which they can proceed to higher studies in Political Science; and
  7. To imbue in the students a deep appreciation of the political dynamics of society and the impact of this on wider socio-economic development and societal well-being.
Admission Requirements
  1. Five credit passes at SSCE (or its equivalent) in English Language, Mathematics, Government, and two other Arts or Social Science subjects.
  2. UTME candidates must score the minimum points in the following subjects: English, Government and any other two Arts and Social Science subjects.
  3. Direct Entry requirement: Two “A” level credit passes in Arts and/or Social Science subjects. Credit passes in NCE and Diploma related discipline.
  4. Candidates must in addition to above satisfy the University Matriculation requirements.
